Oklahoma County jail's death toll draws federal ire
At least 44 jail inmates have died in the jail's custody since Jan. 1, 2000, records show.
Several were suicides, often by hanging. A few were beaten to death by other inmates. One may have been killed by detention officers. Many died from natural causes, but sometimes those health problems may have been aggravated by beatings or poor care.
Some of the deaths were actually in the jail. Others occurred after inmates were moved for medical treatment.
Three times — in 1998, 2002 and 2005 — babies born to jail inmates did not survive.
1.Almost a dozen inmates killed themselves since Jan. 1, 2000. The latest suicide was in April. Kenneth Griffin, 48, a former police officer, was found hanging from a sheet tied through an upper bunk.
2.Three inmates were beaten to death by other inmates.
3.Some inmates whose deaths were ruled from natural causes had
suffered recent beatings that may have contributed to their deaths.
4.Three times — in 1998, 2002 and 2005 — babies born to jail inmates did not survive.
One of the examples in the Justice Department report was the 2005 baby death. The Justice Department said the care of the baby's mother was "unconscionable;" the mother had been handcuffed to a rail for most of 10 hours.
The Justice Department reported the mother was found on the ground in bloody water after being handcuffed to a rail for about 10 hours. She was observed pulling out the baby herself.
And now look at the ignorant,insensitive,evil ,biased and prejudiced excuse of the Sheriff ,John Whetsel.
"The majority of the people who come in here are not those who take care of their health," Whetsel said. "Even one death is too many, but unfortunately the vast majority of these are heart attacks or just health issues that lead to their death."
Many inmates have serious drug-related health problems, Whetsel said.
"To us, every life is important regardless of who they are. Even a person who is here on some bad charge. ... When they can't save that life, our detention officers themselves become extremely emotional," the longtime sheriff said.
Now this Sheriff is complicit in inhumane treatment that has lead to too many deaths.Knowingly,willingly,feloniously.
Extreme Constitutional rights violations.
The Justice Department initiated this investigation back in 2003.
This is 2008.Also complicit.
At least 12 out of 44 were not health related

How long will we stand for these injustices to our own people ,children? Read the comments below the article and see the corruption that many in our City know first hand. In your City.Our Nation. The time is near for these son's of perdition to be held accountable and responsible. And may God mete out His Justice soon ...for if the people get ahold of these blood letters and profiteers of suffering they will wish they had the fate that Saddam H. got. A quick death by hanging. Though, when the world learns of the extent of their crimes and lies, they will be cutting their tongues out one piece at a time. The nations Rage is bottled up and shall be let out. But lets pray that you men and women do the right thing and REPENT. And then the next step.Correct these injustices and profess righteousness.
